What is AI SEO, really?

Answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization, AISEO: three labels crowding one idea. Here is what the work actually is, what it can realistically do for a Malaysian business, and where anyone selling guarantees is selling you something else.

The short answer
Layer 01AI OverviewsGoogle answers many searches directly at the top of the page now, including in Malaysia.
Layer 02Chat toolsChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name a handful of businesses instead of listing links.
Layer 03Same fundamentalsBoth layers still run on a crawlable, clearly written, honestly structured site.

AI SEO is the work of getting a business named and cited inside AI-generated answers, the sentences ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews hand someone who asks a question, instead of the list of links a search used to return. It builds on classic SEO rather than replacing it: the same crawlable site and clear writing, plus a handful of practices, direct answers, structured data, consistent entity details, aimed specifically at how these systems retrieve and cite. Nobody can promise you a citation. What the work can do is make a business easy for these systems to find, trust and quote correctly.

The jargon, decoded

Three labels, one job.

Ask three people what to call this and you may get three different acronyms, said with three different amounts of confidence. Here is what each one is actually pointing at.

AEO: answer engine optimization

The original name for this practice: earning the spot as the cited answer rather than a listed link. It is the term most people writing about the field reach for first, and the one that has settled closest to a shared meaning.

GEO: generative engine optimization

The same underlying idea, a different acronym, used more in technical and marketing circles than by anyone actually typing a search. Some treat GEO and AEO as interchangeable. Others split GEO out for standalone chat tools and keep AEO for AI Overviews. The industry has not settled the boundary, and honestly, it may not need to.

AISEO, sometimes written AI SEO, is the umbrella term most Malaysian businesses will actually hear, usually from an agency pitch rather than a search bar. On Google's Keyword Planner, "answer engine optimization" gets about 90 searches a month in Malaysia; "ai seo malaysia" gets roughly 480. Nobody here is typing the acronyms yet, but interest in the plain-language version is real and growing. The label matters far less than the work underneath it.

Under the hood

How these systems choose who to name.

Nobody outside these companies publishes the exact mechanism, but the pattern across AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity is consistent enough to describe. A few things keep showing up in what gets cited.

Parseability

Content the machine can read cleanly

Pages that load fast, avoid burying the point in decoration, and say plainly what they are about get parsed with less effort than pages that make a system guess.

Placement

Direct answers where retrieval looks

A clear answer sitting near the top of a page, in plain sentences, is easier to lift and quote than the same fact buried three paragraphs into a story.

Structured data

Schema that removes the guesswork

FAQPage, Service and Organization markup state directly what a page is and who it belongs to, instead of leaving a system to infer it from marketing copy.

Entity consistency

The same business, everywhere

The same name, address and details across your site, your profiles and the directories that mention you, so a system can be confident which business it is actually looking at.

Put plainly: a system that can parse your page and confirm who you are will use it. A system that has to guess moves on to whichever page made the guessing unnecessary.

In practice

What the work actually looks like.

In practice this is unglamorous, disciplined work, not a plugin you switch on. A short, direct answer sits near the top of each page that matters, written so it still makes sense pulled out of context, because that is exactly what a retrieval system does to it. FAQPage and Service structured data sit on service pages, stating plainly what is on offer instead of leaving a system to infer it from prose. One organisation identity, the same name, address and details, is wired through every page's schema rather than left to drift between a site, a profile and a directory listing somewhere else. And the writing itself is organised so a single section can stand on its own and still carry a complete, accurate claim, because a system that retrieves one paragraph does not go back and read the rest of the page.

We run this exact practice on our own site: the answer blocks, the FAQPage and Service schema, one consistent organisation identity carried through every page's structured data. None of it is hidden. Anyone can view source on jymedialab.my and check it against what is described here. If you want to see how this fits inside a full engagement rather than sitting on its own, our SEO service page covers it.

The honest limit

Nobody can promise you a citation.

Nobody can guarantee a citation, ours included, because the systems change without notice and their internal choices are not fully observable from outside. Google has not published exactly how AI Overviews picks its sources. Neither has OpenAI, nor Google for Gemini. Anyone telling you otherwise is guessing, the same as everyone else in this field.

Measurement here is younger than classic rank tracking, too. A position on a results page is a fact you can check today and check again tomorrow. Whether a chat tool named your business in a given answer is harder to observe consistently, and the tooling for it across the industry, ours included, is still catching up to what rank trackers do for classic search.

Anyone selling a guaranteed ChatGPT placement is selling confidence, not control, because control over what an outside AI system chooses to say is not something an agency actually has. What we commit to instead is the inputs: the structure, the clarity, the consistency, built properly and kept up. Then we measure what follows and tell you honestly what moved and what did not.

Malaysia, right now

Does this matter in Malaysia yet?

Judged purely by search volume, this looks like a niche concern. On Google's Keyword Planner, "answer engine optimization" gets about 90 searches a month in Malaysia, and "ai seo malaysia" gets roughly 480. Most business owners here are not typing either phrase.

But the behaviour underneath the jargon is not niche at all. Google shows AI Overviews that answer many searches directly at the top of the page, including in Malaysia, and buying research that used to start with a search box increasingly starts inside a chat window instead. Being early is the actual point: the structure, the schema and the consistency compound quietly while the term itself is still unfamiliar, and they get harder to catch up on once everyone else has caught on too.

Questions we get

Asked about AI SEO.

01

Is AI SEO different from normal SEO?

Not a replacement, an extension. AI SEO still needs the same foundation as classic SEO: a crawlable site, sound technical health, content that answers real questions clearly. On top of that foundation it adds a few specific practices, direct answer blocks, FAQPage and Service structured data, one consistent organisation identity across every page and profile, aimed at how retrieval systems read and cite rather than how a results page ranks. Skip the foundation and the extra layer has nothing solid underneath it.

02

Can you guarantee ChatGPT recommends my business?

No, and we would be wary of anyone who tells you yes. Nobody outside the companies running these systems controls which businesses get named in a given answer, and their selection process is not fully public. What we can commit to is the groundwork these systems tend to reward: clear structure, accurate structured data, and one consistent identity across every place a business appears online. Then we measure what actually happens and report it honestly, no guarantee attached.

03

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

Mostly the acronym. AEO, answer engine optimization, is the more established term for the general practice of being the cited answer rather than a listed link. GEO, generative engine optimization, describes much the same idea and shows up more in technical and marketing circles than in what people actually search. Some treat the two as identical; others reserve GEO for standalone chat tools and keep AEO for AI Overviews. The boundary is not settled industry-wide, and the label matters far less than the underlying work.

04

Do we need a new website for this?

Usually not. Answer blocks, structured data and entity consistency retrofit onto a site that is otherwise healthy: they are additions to existing pages, not a rebuild. The exception is a site carrying real technical problems underneath, broken crawlability, missing indexation, pages that barely load, because those issues block classic SEO and the AI layer alike. Fix that foundation first. Once it is solid, the AI-SEO layer is a targeted addition, not a full rebuild of what you already have.
